but could find none

the piers deserted
       the harbours empty

while
       attempting to maintain a faith

in all I brought with me
       at dawn time or twilight

(and they both are the same)

a believer, yes,
in the rightness of the world

even though there was much
       I did not/do not understand

no more than I
       understood that music

no more than I
       could draw on those verbs

the comforting ones
       the enticing ones

afraid of what
       I'd have to surrender there

not sure of what would be the return

though there would be no return
       once I'd set out

committed as I was
       to chance and uncertainty

boatman
       where are you now?

here are my coins
       here my compliance
