James Valvis

On Top, On Bottom, and Those in the Middle

the floor envies
the ceiling’s
majestic station

the ceiling envies
the floor’s
firm foundation

exhausted
the walls
like Atlas

shoulder
at all times
the ceiling

and from
their window like
Prometheus

deliver onto
the floor
all its light

Nightona 500

competition
even in this

in their bed

they take
their marks

he faces
one wall

she, the other

then race
to fall off

winner sleeps

loser lies
for hours

listening to
the winner’s

obnoxious
triumphant

snoring
